Prenatal and Post Natal Reformer Pilates on the Southern Gold Coast

Soul Athletic Tugun sits at 10/489 Gold Coast Highway, minutes from the beach, with 15 reformers and classes seven days a week.

We look after members through pregnancy and back again afterwards, and the Parents and Bubs classes that come after are free.

That combination is unusual.

Most studios will modify a class for you while you are pregnant.

Far fewer give you somewhere to bring the baby once they are here.

Training through pregnancy at Tugun

Provided you have clearance from your doctor or midwife and your pregnancy is low risk, you are welcome in Reformer Flow and Reformer Strength.

Flow is the one to start with if you are new to the reformer. It is our foundational class, the pace is controlled, and it gives your instructor the most room to adjust things for you. Strength is there if that is already the style you train in - it adds weights suited to your capability rather than pushing intensity for its own sake.

We do ask prenatal members to stay out of Reformer Active. It uses the jumpboard, and jumping is not recommended during pregnancy.

Classes are capped at 15, which is what makes individual adjustment possible. Your instructor cannot modify around you if they do not know where you are, so tell them before every class, not just your first. What worked at 16 weeks will not be what works at 34.

If you want the detail - what changes in the body, what happens trimester by trimester, and the warning signs that mean stopping and calling your doctor - read our full guide to prenatal reformer Pilates. It applies at Tugun exactly as it does in Melbourne.

Free Parents and Bubs classes at Tugun

Once you have had your baby, our Parents and Bubs reformer Pilates classes run here at the Tugun studio, and they are free.

You bring your baby into the room with you rather than working out around them. No pram in the car park, no timing the class between feeds, no leaving them with someone. They come too.

Two things to know before you book:

•     The classes are for non-movers - babies who are not yet crawling. Once they are on the move it stops being safe in a room with reformers.

•     You need medical clearance for group exercise after birth. That is a conversation with your GP or obstetrician, and it is usually somewhere between six and eight weeks postpartum depending on your birth and your recovery.

Beyond that, come as you are. Nobody in the room is going to mind a baby who needs a feed halfway through.

Register your interest in Parents and Bubs and our team will text you the next available class time.

Coming back to regular classes after birth

Once you have been cleared, every class is open to you - Flow, Active and Strength. There is no postnatal programme you have to graduate from first.

A lot of members choose Flow for the first few weeks anyway, simply because it is the most controlled of the three. That is a preference rather than a rule, and plenty go straight back to what they were doing before.

Tell your instructor how far postpartum you are and how your birth went. It changes what they will have you doing, particularly around the core. You do not need to announce it to the room - arrive a few minutes early and mention it quietly.

Some members are back at six weeks. Some come back at eight months. Neither is late.

The studio

Soul Athletic Tugun is the largest studio in our network and the only one outside Bayside Melbourne. There is a mural across the back wall painted by a local artist, which is usually the first thing people mention.

•     15 reformers, and every class capped at 15

•     45 minute classes, over 40 a week, seven days

•     Free parking directly out the front

•     Monday to Friday 5:15am to 8:15pm, Saturday 7:00am to 12:00pm, Sunday 8:00am to 12:00pm

•     5.0 from more than 70 Google reviews

We are a five minute drive or less from Bilinga, Currumbin and Coolangatta, and members come to us from Currumbin Waters, Palm Beach and Kirra.

One membership, seven studios

Soul Athletic is family owned and in its tenth year, with seven studios - six across Bayside Melbourne and Tugun here on the southern Gold Coast. One membership covers all of them, so if you are heading south to family for a few weeks your classes travel with you.

Getting started

Get cleared by your doctor or midwife first. Then book a Reformer Flow class and tell your instructor you are pregnant and how far along you are, or how far postpartum.

New clients can try 5 classes for $50, valid for 14 days.

If you would rather ask a question before you book, email studio@soulathletic.com.au or call 0433 555 218 and we will talk you through it.
